History

Tomatillo Ixocarpa Physalis Purple, as its exotic name inclines, comes from S. America . It played a significant role in Mayan and Aztec cultures, as these civilizations gave it a much superior role than tomato itself. Passed to Mexicans before Europeans arrive, some of this Solanaceae family are dated more than 50 million-year-old. Luckily, they made it till now!

Name

Tomatillo Purple Also known as husk tomato because of the goldish pod that grows with the fruit, other names are also given , “Strawberry tomato” , “Verde” , “Farolito” , “Purple cherry”, “Aztec Purple” are some of them. It’s current name Physalis comes from Ancient Greece and means “blow up”.

Description

Tomatillo Purple Closely related to tomato, it produces round smooth fruits 5-7 cm (2 Inc). Green at the early stages and purple as tomatillo ripes. Flowers come in many colours from white to bright yellow and sometimes purple. It tastes citrussy, but also a bit sweet as it matures. Plant is a bush max two feet high (70 cm) and is considered as high incompatible, so cross pollination is advised (at least two plants together if we want fruits).

Where to Use

Tomatillo Purple is edible except the calyx. Mexicans use it for various salsas and sauces like “verde” and Waka mole. You can use it to decorate your dishes and cocktails, or make a purple pulp and garnish your plates with an exotic look!
