Name & History
Obviously, got its name from its cylindrical shape. This variety has a complicated history. Some say that it’s the same as formanova beet, but we couldn’t find proof of that. Overall, it looks like its origins can be traced somewhere between Denmark and France, since it first appeared in a French catalogue at early 60s.
Description
Beet cylindra seeds will give a dark red-purple fruit-root ,10cm – 5 Inch long. Its flesh is optimum for slicing, and it tastes sweet. Its red-green leaves are sweeter than other beets. This extraordinary variety holds a very smooth texture ,and keeps its tenderness for a long period. It bears its root above the ground but its can also been earthed up to prolong its life.
Culinary uses
This variety can be used for pickling and canning. Slice it evenly and create a healthy afternoon salad snack. Don’t forget to use its tender sweet leaves. It’s an excellent choice for barbecue also as this gives a very tender caramelized flavour to the root with a fantastic sweet “aroma”.
Cultivation tips
- Start early after last frost
- The plant get frost hardy after it develops well
- seed depth 1/2 Inch – 1.5 cm
- Sow in a sunny spot.
- Not too sensitive it can tollerate shade
- Water 2-3 times per week, Do not overwater as this only gives more leaves
