Name & History

Got the name from its home town. Broccoli Calabrese made its way to USA through Italian immigrants at late 1800s. It was found in Italy hundreds of years before. Although they look like a lot, the standard Broccoli is different from Calabrese. The smaller head with green or purple heads is the broccoli and with the large heads is the calabrese which have milder flavour and for many much more delicate.

Description

Its a dark green plant 45-80 cm tall which produces large bluish green heads and continues until frost. It tastes much milder than the standard broccoli and they say that it smells less when boiled. It’s been said that it also has anti-cancer characteristics and promotes health.

Culinary uses

Use it in your salads and your risottos. Some are having it as a juice also.

  • Start 6-8 week before last frost indoors
  • Use rich nutrient soil
  • Seed depth 1Inch-3 cm
  • Keep the plant moist through all its stages,
  • Dont overwater
  • Transplant when you can see 3-4 leaves
